WebYayo's Combat 3 and Combat Update 1.1 are nice alternatives to Combat extended (at least in my opinion), they play nice with far more mods and allow for pawns to be much more accurate and consistent at high levels amongst other things. It's not nearly as brutal as Combat extended, but that's probably better for a beginner player.
